Emergency Work on Montréal’s Water Distribution System: Residents encouraged to reduce their consumption of drinkable water

Due to emergency work being carried out on the City of Montréal’s water distribution system, the City of Westmount is asking residents and businesses to make a collective effort to reduce their consumption of drinkable water throughout the summer.

This request is part of a regional situation affecting more than one million residents on the Island of Montreal. It is related to urgent work on a major water main in Montreal’s water distribution system, located beneath Atwater Avenue, which supplies, among other facilities, the McTavish Reservoir. During this period, the water distribution system will be under increased pressure, and a reduction in water consumption is required throughout the agglomeration to help maintain system stability.

Westmount is supplied by the Ville de Montréal’s drinking water system and is contributing to this collective effort by following the recommendations issued by the agglomeration.

Examples of Recommended Measures for Residents and Businesses

• Reduce lawn watering and landscape irrigation;
• Postpone, when possible, filling or topping up swimming pools;
• Limit the use of drinkable water for washing driveways, vehicles and outdoor surfaces.

Monitoring the Situation

To support this collective effort, the City of Westmount is also implementing measures to reduce its water consumption. The situation is being closely monitored in collaboration with the City of Montréal. Additional measures may be introduced as conditions evolve throughout the summer.
