City Hall area: Argyle, Kensington and Metcalfe avenues
The City of Westmount is continuing its efforts to improve road safety around schools in the City Hall area. This project aims to create safer school routes that are clearer and better suited to the needs of children, families and all road users.
For several years, the City has been receiving concerns from residents, parents, schools and emergency services teams regarding traffic, dangerous manoeuvres and safety issues observed in school zones around City Hall. Mobility and road safety studies, consultations, and collaborative work with schools and road safety experts have identified several areas for improvement.
The project involves the gradual implementation of various safety measures, including:
The first measures of this project are scheduled to be implemented starting in July 2026, and will be rolled out gradually, with adjustments based on observations on the ground.

I think we should keep Argyle opened to go up. It helps slow down the very fast cars from parents coming down the mountain at full speed at school hours. If one-way, those cars would just go faster I would however stricly prohibit “wild’ drop offs in the middle of the street as it happens today, and ask the school , notably Selwyn, to create a drop off zone instead. Also, the only option to go up towards Cote des Neiges would be Mountain, which is often not salted in the winter. Argyle is.
Etc
Making Argyle one way south between Montrose and cote st Antoine will improve traffic congestion but will not reduce speeding on Argyle unless speed bumps are added. Also, to increase pedestrian safety at the corner of Argyle and cote st Antoine, enforcement of full vehicle STOPs and TURN signaling must be done!
I'm all for the changes to single directions on Metcalfe and Kensington. I'm hoping these changes will be limited to the blocks between St. Antoine and Sherbrooke St, and NOT to their respective lengths south of Sherbrooke St.
I fully oppose the one way for argyle at least above montrose. The only issue for children safety is the speeding cars. A one way will not fix the speeding issue. We simply need a couple of speed bumps.
Then at the lower section of argyle there should be permit parking for residents and only parking allowed on one side.
This project was not well promoted and there should have been more awareness to submit our thoughts and opinions.
I live at [...] Argyle Avenue between Thornhill and Cote Sainte Antoine [...]. I am for changing Argyle to one way down as a safety measure, conserving parking for residents on the west side of the street.
This is ridiculous !
